Handcrafted Japanese Double Sword Stand Unkai Fuji Style

Traditional Japanese Woodwork Handmade in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture

An exceptional handcrafted Japanese sword stand for two swords, created in the traditional Unkai Fuji (雲海富士) style. Designed not merely as a functional display stand, this piece reflects the aesthetics, symbolism and craftsmanship associated with the samurai culture of historical Japan.

The stand is individually made by a specialist craftsman based in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, who studied under the late Yoshihiko Sasama, a respected researcher of Japanese samurai armour and arms.

His workshop is dedicated to the repair and restoration of antique samurai-related objects, as well as the traditional production of sword stands and other historical display pieces.

Inspired by the Age of the Samurai

The design draws inspiration from the Muromachi through early Edo periods, an era in which the samurai warrior class played a defining role in Japanese society.

Rather than creating a modern interpretation, the craftsman studies surviving historical documents and traditional examples in an effort to reproduce the proportions, construction, form and aged character associated with sword stands from earlier centuries.

Historical sword furniture and stands were not designed purely for practical purposes. Their dimensions, forms and decorative elements could reflect the traditions, philosophy and aesthetic ideals of the samurai who owned and used them.

This philosophy forms the foundation of the present work.

Unkai Fuji Mount Fuji Above the Sea of Clouds

The Unkai Fuji theme evokes one of Japan’s most iconic landscapes: Mount Fuji rising above a sea of clouds (unkai).

Fuji has long held a special place in Japanese culture and is associated with strength, permanence, beauty and spiritual significance. Combined with the flowing imagery of clouds, the design creates an elegant and distinctly Japanese presentation for an important pair of swords.

The traditional appearance of the stand makes it particularly suitable for displaying a daishō, consisting of a katana and wakizashi, although it may also be used for other combinations of Japanese swords.

    Traditional Craftsmanship

Each stand is produced with careful attention to its historical appearance. The objective is not to create something that looks industrially new, but rather to capture the character and atmosphere of an authentic traditional Japanese object.

Subtle variations resulting from hand craftsmanship should therefore be regarded as part of the individuality and character of the piece.

For collectors of Nihontō, samurai art and Japanese antiques, this sword stand offers a particularly attractive way to display two swords while maintaining an appropriate historical atmosphere.
