Antique Japanese Sanbon Kake Black Lacquer & Gold Maki-e with Paulownia Mon

An Elegant Three Sword Stand Reflecting the Prestige and Beauty of Japan’s Samurai Heritage

Late Edo to Meiji Period Attributed (19th to early 20th century)

Kyodai Originals is pleased to present this magnificent Japanese Sanbon kake (三本掛け), an elegant three-sword display stand acquired directly from Japan.

Beautifully crafted in deep black lacquer and richly decorated with gold coloured maki-e-style floral patterns, this exceptional piece reflects the refined artistry and sophisticated aesthetics of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

The most distinctive feature is the Kiri mon (桐紋), the historic paulownia family crest. Associated with the Japanese Imperial Court and powerful historical figures such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi, this prestigious emblem symbolises authority, dignity and noble heritage.

Delicate golden vines, leaves and flowers flow gracefully across the lacquered surfaces, complemented by elegant gold coloured edging. The beautifully shaped supports and harmonious proportions give the stand a distinguished, almost architectural presence.

Designed to display three Japanese swords, this katana kake provides a magnificent setting for a katana, wakizashi and tantō, or an exceptional collection of nihontō.

Its traditional design and decorative style suggest an origin in the late Edo to Meiji period, although its exact age has not been independently established.

More than a sword stand, this is a beautiful expression of Japanese decorative art, combining history, symbolism and timeless elegance.
