Minatogawa Masaaki’s Exquisite Japanese Shrine Sword

This exceptional Minatogawa Shrine sword, crafted by the renowned Masuda Masaaki in Showa 19 (1944), embodies a rich legacy of Japanese sword-making. With a Nagasa (blade length) of 62.8 cm and a subtle curvature of 1.6 cm, this rare masterpiece holds a unique place in history.

A Masterpiece of Historical Craftsmanship

Forged by skilled swordsmiths Michimasa Murakami (Masatada) and Kaname Moriwaki (Morimitsu), this sword represents the pinnacle of traditional Japanese metallurgy. Trained at the Yasugi factory of Hitachi Metals Co., Ltd., they later became swordsmiths at Minatogawa Shrine. Beginning their journey in Showa 15 (1940), they dedicated themselves to crafting superior military swords for naval officers.

Inscription and Symbolism

A defining feature of this blade is its inscription by Masuda Masaaki, reading: “Minatogawa River Shrine, Shomei, February 19, Showa 19.” This authenticates its creation date and origin. The design, known as the Kikusui Sword, beautifully incorporates chrysanthemum flowers and flowing water, symbolizing the mythical longevity properties of chrysanthemum juice.

The Legacy of the Chrysanthemum Crest

The chrysanthemum crest has deep historical significance. It traces its roots to the loyalty of Kusunoki Masanari during the Northern and Southern Dynasties. His emblem, a partially washed-away chrysanthemum, became a lasting symbol of resilience and dedication, forming part of Minatogawa Shrine’s heritage.

Symbol of National Loyalty and War

During the Battle of Greater East Asia, the chrysanthemum crest became a powerful emblem of allegiance to the emperor and Japan. It adorned kamikaze planes and warships, symbolizing unwavering dedication in crucial moments of history.
