WWII Yasukunito Katana by Kotani Yasunori (1943)This exceptional Yasukunito katana, forged by the renowned Kotani Yasunori in 1943, represents the pinnacle of Japanese sword craftsmanship during World War II. As one of the last Yasukuni Shrine swordsmiths, Yasunori’s work is highly coveted for its historical significance and exceptional quality.Kotani Kenzo, later known as Yasunori, was born on January 7, 1909, in Hiroshima Prefecture. He trained under his uncle, Kajiyama Taketoku (Yasutoku), and alongside his cousin, Kajiyama Toshimichi (Yasutoshi). In 1935, Kotani was granted the swordsmith title “Yasunori” by Army Minister Hayashi Senjuro, marking his induction into the elite ranks of Yasukuni Shrine swordsmiths.During his tenure, Yasunori crafted custom swords for high-ranking officials, including Higashi no Miya and Field Marshal Terauchi. His exceptional skill earned him numerous accolades, including top prizes in 1936 and 1937 at the Yasukuni Shrine competitions. After the war, he continued producing swords under the name Takenori and participated in NBTHK contests, winning multiple awards. Yasunori passed away on March 1, 2003, as the last Yasukuni Shrine smith.
