Description

Katana Komihara – A Masterpiece of the Ko-Mihara School The Katana Komihara is a historically significant Japanese sword, classified as a Tokubetsu Hozon (Special Preservation Sword) by the NBTHK. With a blade length of 66.6 cm, a curvature of 1.1 cm, and a width of 3.1 cm at the hamachi, this katana exemplifies the craftsmanship of the late Kamakura to Nanbokucho period (circa 1300–1392). Origin and School This sword originates from the Mihara school, which thrived in Bingo Province (modern-day Hiroshima Prefecture). The Mihara school was founded in the late 13th century by Kokubunji Sukekuni (国分寺助国). It gained prominence through the works of master swordsmiths such as Mihara Masaie (三原正家) and his son Masahiro (正広). The Mihara school is traditionally divided into three periods: Ko-Mihara (Old Mihara) – Blades from the late Kamakura to Nanbokucho period (1300s). Mihara – Blades from the early to mid-Muromachi period. Sue-Mihara (Late Mihara) – Blades from the late Muromachi period. Historical and Artistic Value This particular blade is attributed to the Ko-Mihara school, meaning it was forged more than 700 years ago. During this era, swordsmiths focused on creating durable yet elegant swords with strong curvature and refined craftsmanship. The Mihara school’s swords are known for their well-balanced proportions and fine grain structures. The Kasane (thickness) of 6.5 mm and a kissaki width of 2.05 cm indicate a robust yet precise design. The two mekugi-ana (peg holes) suggest that the sword was mounted multiple times throughout its history, emphasizing its long-standing use and preservation. Conclusion The Katana Komihara stands as a testament to Japan’s samurai heritage. Its historical significance, attributed craftsmanship, and exceptional condition make it a prized piece among collectors and enthusiasts. A blade of this age and quality is a rare find, carrying with it the spirit and legacy of Japan’s warrior class.
