Shape and Forging
A blade of imposing form, featuring a wide body (mihaba), thick spine (kasane), deep curvature (sori), and a long extended kissaki (point).
A bohi (groove) is carved on both the omote and ura sides, lending the blade both elegance and balance.
The jigane (steel surface) is a Nie-deki structure forged in the Sōshū-den tradition, displaying intricate grain and vitality.
The hamon is a Nie-deki gunome-midare, forming a double wave pattern, rich in sunagashi (streaming lines) and kinsuji (golden streaks).
The boshi (tip temper line) is midare-komi with hakikake, resembling brushstrokes of mist.
Swordsmiths and Lineage
This katana is a collaboration between Yusuishin Sadayoshi and Sadahito, two swordsmiths of the modern era.
Yusuishin Sadayoshi (born 1908, Meiji 41) studied under the legendary Gassan Sadakatsu, inheriting the techniques of the Gassan lineage.
In 1928 (Shōwa 3), he entered Sadakatsu’s forge and, in 1943 (Shōwa 18), moved to Mishima, Shizuoka, adopting the smith name “Wakimizu” (湧水心 – Pure Spring Water).
Sadayoshi was renowned for selecting the pure spring water of Mount Fuji for his forging process, believing that crystal-clear water produced the most refined steel.
His blades often show traces of the Gassan ayasugi-hada (flowing grain pattern), a hallmark of the Gassan school.
Later, Sadayoshi achieved Mukansa status (exempt from competition judging) and received numerous honors, including the Masamune Award, one of Japan’s highest recognitions for swordsmiths.
His collaborator, Sadahito, shared the same artistic spirit and technical mastery, creating a perfectly balanced fusion of tradition and modern excellence.
Koshirae (Mounting)
The sword is accompanied by a Tachi-style koshirae, refined and elegant in form.
Saya (Scabbard): Decorated with the Daki Myōga family crest in silver inlay.
Menuki: Carved with the Daki Myōga motif.
Fittings: All metal fittings (kanagu) are engraved with the same crest.
Theme: The mount is adorned with stone resembling coral, adding both color and rarity.
Appraisal and Remarks
This piece represents a rare collaboration between two accomplished smiths, combining the refined forging methods of the Gassan tradition with the personal artistry of Yusuishin Sadayoshi.
As a custom-ordered heirloom sword, the blade has been carefully polished, preserving its beauty and precision.
