Tango no Kami Jumyō – Walking Stick Wakizashi
Edo Period (17th Century)

This is a rare and fascinating walking stick sword (shikomizue) housing a wakizashi forged by Tango no Kami Jumyō, one of the highly regarded smiths of the Edo period (17th century).

The Jumyō lineage, active in Mino Province, was famed for producing blades of exceptional sharpness and durability, highly valued by samurai and daimyo. The honorary title Tango no Kami was granted by the Imperial Court, underscoring the smith’s prestige.

In this unique piece, the blade is mounted discreetly within a walking stick-style scabbard, a form of concealed weapon (shikomizue) popular during the Edo period. Such swords allowed samurai and high-ranking townsmen to carry protection while maintaining a refined and inconspicuous appearance in urban settings.

The wakizashi blade itself reflects the Jumyō school’s characteristic workmanship—renowned for a bright jigane, a strong, lively hamon, and a refined balance that made these swords both practical and beautiful.

This piece is not only a weapon but also an artifact of Edo-period ingenuity and craftsmanship, blending artistry, practicality, and an air of mystery.
